Fujitsu Stylistic 3400 , Tablet PC

The Fujitsu Stylistic 3400 took a good amount of work to get XP Pro installed onto it.

The reason I bought the Fujitsu Stylistic 3400 was because I needed something to read the many eBooks (books that are only on the computer). The University of Phoenix seems to have switched all of its books to downloadable PDF\'s in an attempt to keep prices down and make the books available quickly. Before this, students would have to first purchase the book and wait for it to get delivered since there is no on campus book store.

Reading the eBooks on my main computer was a pain. Plus, the temptation to do anything else other than read an eBook was too much. Many hours of gaming was racked up when I should of been reading. Then there was reading eBooks on my laptop. A heavy desktop replacement type that was better, but still bulky to be walking around with.

Then I started searching for a cheap used tablet and found: Fujitsu Stylistic 3400

* $196 used from J&K Sales, Inc.
* $35 for 128mb mem stick from 18004Memory.com
* $45 for PCCard: Linksys Wireless-G adapter (WPC54G ver.3)
* $0 for 3400setup.zip from TabletPCBuzz.com

Problem: Device came loaded with win98. This is how I performed an upgrade to Windows XP Pro:

* Remedy: I simply pulled the hard drive(HDD) and loaded usb cd-rom drivers for my device.
* Replaced the hard drive and copied the i386 folder from the XP CD onto the hard drive.
* Ran the i386\\winnt.exe from Windows 98 and did an upgrade.
* After the install, I had a working copy of XP on my 3400.

Then tragedy struck and I had to reinstall Windows XP (don't ask). This is when things turned for the worst.

Following the instructions fround on TabletPCBuzz.com, there was some concern about running fdisk on the HDD. This is my personal experience:

* Problem: Pulled HDD from tablet, ran fdisk from standard PC. (This is a no-no)
* You will be able to load Win98 and run FAT filesystem without any problems. But thats boring, we all want XP.
* If you fdisk the HDD, the new MBR uses a drive geometry that is different than what the Fujiitsu 3400 BIOS uses. FAT works fine, but once you run Win200/XP install and format the drive with NTFS/FAT you will get the NTLDR is missing error.
* Remedy: You will either have to buy / borrow a compatible Fujitsu Stylistic external floppy drive and run fdisk on the tablet device. No other way around this, unless you are able to get ahold of a HDD image like Norton Ghost or Acronis, but I have not tested this method.

* $23 used Fujitsu Stylistic LT 1100 Floppy drive from eBay
Fujitsu Stylistic LT 1100 floppy drive

* $15 USB Ethernet Adapter from CompUSA
USB ethernet device
* Drivers for this device come on a floppy drive. To make things even better, there is no CompUSA driver download for this. I had to find drivers by searching by the Part No.

This link to TablePCBuzz.com will probably explain better:
